Happy New Canon Thursday readers! I am trying something a little different out today. To streamline my new canons, and make them more visually fun, I am putting together playing card type posts!
WHO: The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
WHERE: The Book Maven Podcast New Canon
WHAT: This novel is a historical fiction that weaves the past and present together. It focuses on two twin sisters and their daughters, weaving in and out of each other’s lives. All of the characters struggle with issues of race, identity, and generational trauma. The story is beautifully told and extremely captivating.
WHY: This novel by Brit Bennett deals with different identities in all of the characters throughout the book in a way that doesn’t make any of the characters seem flat or one dimensional. It is well done from a craft standpoint in that regard. Bennett also makes readers care about each and every character, which is not easy to do. Furthermore, the reoccurring themes of race, identity, family, community, class, privilege, and generational trauma, are tackled in a way that doesn’t feel forced for the reader. I think this book is really important because it can get people to sympathize and listen to a story that they might not otherwise ever hear. It is also a very well done and entertaining book, on top of everything.
