Hello readers! Welcome back to Thursday New Canon. After a much needed break for the holidays, I am so excited to be back!
2025 is off to an eventful start already, and will just get more interesting in the months to come. It might feel overwhelming, impossible, or exhausting to continue to fight the good fight. The book I am adding to the canon this week speaks to the resiliency of the human spirit, and how important continuing to push past insurmountable odds is.
Without further ado, this week’s addition to the canon is Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand.
WHO: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
WHERE: The Book Maven Podcast New Canon
WHAT: This book is based on the true story of Louis Zamperini, who was a WWII veteran and an Olympic athlete. The story follows his life before WWII, and then vividly details how he survived a plane crash and became a prisoner of war. He was subjected to atrocious things in his time on the Japanese base, but did not let his captors break his spirit. Fear not- this story has a happy ending.
WHY: This story of resilience is inspiring and brought tears to my eyes. For someone to endure bodily atrocities and torture in prison and to emerge with an unbroken spirit and a kind heart speaks to the innate disposition of humans to overcome travesty. I think we as a collective need a reminder that we are not weak, we have endured difficult things and will continue to, and we cannot be broken.
I am canoning Unbroken!
